Transport

What we do

CADRA follows proposed traffic and transport changes, through formal consultations, through the local press, through links with other organisations and through the Transport Users Forum run by the Council on which CADRA is represented.

Road Safety Albert Road/Highmoor Road Junction

CADRA’s note on safety issues at the Albert Road Highmoor Road junction was passed to Reading Borough Council officers by Councillor Ballsdon. RBC officers reviewed the Note and analysed accidents at the junction over the last three years. They concluded that there is no road safety justification for changing the markings at present but, at CADRA’s request, agreed to review them the next time Albert Road is resurfaced.

Bus Services for Caversham

UPDATE 14 - September 2011

Following many protests, revisions are now being made to the new route.  The "22" service will now be routed via The Mount and lower Albert Road in both directions on the new half-hourly service.  You can pick up further information by visiting the Reading Buses website.

Changes to the route and frequency are due for implementation in September. Reading Transport is required to remain viable financially and the 22 route is not meeting its costs. This is partly because this route has the highest proportion of concessionary travellers which is made worse by a reduction in the reimbursement to the bus company earlier this year.

The proposed changes are due to remove Route 22 from Priest Hill, The Mount and Albert Road between The Mount and Highmoor Road. The revised route planned is along Hemdean Road, to Oakley Road, Kidmore Road then Albert Road. Click here to see routes.

This leaves three bus stops with no service - The Mount, Blenheim Road and St Anne’s Well. Reading Borough Council has made funds available for a limited replacement service. This will be provided using Community Link route 28 which will run between Purley, Chapel Hill, Kentwood Hill, Tilehurst, New Lane Hill, Central Reading, Tesco Napier Road, Caversham centre (Waitrose) and Caversham Heights (Albert Road/The Mount area). Planned departures currently planned are from Albert Road/Highmoor Road at 9.30am, 11.10am, 12.10pm, 1.52pm, 4.32pm, and 7.01pm. Return times from Friar Street (Sainsbury’s) will be at 9.02am, 10.50am, 11.51am, 1.33pm, 4.12pm, 6.40pm. On Saturdays a modified service will run on route 18.

Frequencies are being changed as follows:
2/2a 30 minutes
22 30 minutes
23 15 minutes
24 30 minutes

The new shorter double-deck buses on the 22 are to be changed again to more modern double-deckers in September, which have more bell pushes on the lower deck. The layout of stops in Friar Street is due to change from 26th September and will include an extra pick-up for the 9 to the RBH adjacent to the 22 stops from that date.

Correspondence to Reading Transport, Reading Borough Council, Councillors and Rob Wilson, MP is still very active. CADRA has raised specific concerns and is waiting for further responses. Click here for CADRA report.

Proposed new Reading Station.

This note provides information on the pedestrian subway upgrade which forms part of the Reading Station scheme.

At a recent meeting a representative from Network Rail updated CADRA members on the Reading Station Capacity and Performance upgrade scheme. That update was limited to information on the rail scheme itself and although references were made to interchanges and other facilities, which will be provided through the borough council and developers, that information was not complete.
The Reading Station scheme is very complex; it is the largest single rail scheme in the country. To ensure that all aspects are delivered in a co-ordinated way those with key responsibilities sit on the project delivery group the delivery partners are: - Network Rail, Department for Transport, First Great Western and Reading Borough Council (RBC). Reading Borough Council Planning Process for the proposed area around Reading Station

CADRA had a very productive meeting with Pat Baxter, Head of Transport at Reading Borough Council, and James Freeman, Chief Executive of Reading Transport, on July 19th. Mr. Freeman assured the committee that all the new interchanges will make it easier for residents using buses to cross Reading and access town centre shopping. Pat Baxter demonstrated various models the Borough is using to predict use of the new station concourses by pedestrians and cyclists, and also to ensure that people with disabilities have easy access

Reading’s Transport User Forum has a CADRA representative which allows us to comment and hear other views.

How to comment on Transport Plans and Traffic Orders

General comments regarding transport should be sent to:

Transport Strategy, Reading Borough Council, Civic Centre, Reading RG1 7TD

If you wish to record a formal objection to any Traffic Order this should be headed:

Formal Objection to the TRO (with its reference)

and addressed to:

Head of Legal Services, Reading Borough Council, Civic Centre, Reading RG1 7TD

These details are important as the Department of Transport Strategy have already demonstrated their intention not to record objections which do not follow the letter of the procedure.
